Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry at Highlands Family Dental Center is an extremely safe method to have the dentistry you need without the anxiety that many times come with dental procedures. You will be able to complete the necessary dental treatment while being in a relaxed state and still remaining conscious. Often times, our patients are so relaxed they fall asleep during treatment!

Dr. Salazar has been providing sedation dentistry since 2002. As a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, he is committed to continuous training, allowing him to stay current in the latest advancements in dentistry, including sedation.

Types of Sedation Offered at Highlands Family Dental Center

Nitrous oxide: Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is used for patients with mild anxiety. You remain awake throughout the entire procedure and are able to breathe on your own, but you will feel a great sense of relaxation. Its effects are gone immediately after you stop inhaling the gas, so you may resume normal activities as soon as your appointment is done.
Oral sedation: For patients with a higher level of anxiety, we prescribe an oral sedative for you to take before your appointment. You will remain conscious but relaxed and very sleepy throughout your procedure, and will usually have little memory of the procedure afterward. Because the level of sedation is deeper and lasts longer, you will need another person to bring you to the appointment and take you back home.

Is Sedation Right for You?

Most patients are good candidates for sedation, although there are exceptions. During your consultation at our Renton dental office, Dr. Salazar will evaluate you unique situation, dental needs, medical history, and current medications and make recommendations based on what he thinks will be most beneficial to you.
